60 Day Pillars (Jia Zi): The Career and Work-Style Matrix
The day pillar is the third of the four pillars in a BaZi (八字, Four Pillars of Destiny) chart, and the stem sitting on top of it is your Day Master. Because only 60 stem-branch pairs exist, every person's day pillar is one of exactly 60 rows. BaZi Oracle computes your day pillar free of charge from your birth data, and the matrix below maps all 60 rows to a sitting star, work strengths, watch-outs and suited roles. It is the reference layer behind the day-master guides on this site.
How to read the matrix
Each row lists the day pillar, its Chinese characters, the sitting star — the ten-god relation between the day stem and the main hidden stem of the branch below it — and three practical columns. The ten-god names follow the standard translations: Direct Resource, Indirect Resource, Direct Officer, Seven Killings, Direct Wealth, Indirect Wealth, Eating God, Hurting Officer, Friend (Bi Jian) and Rob Wealth (Jie Cai). Their exact logic is on the ten gods guide; the short version is below.
| Sitting star | One-line logic |
|---|---|
| Direct Resource (Zheng Yin) | The branch feeds the Day Master with opposite polarity: learning, care, credentials |
| Indirect Resource (Pian Yin) | The branch feeds the Day Master with the same polarity: unorthodox learning, depth, solitude |
| Direct Officer (Zheng Guan) | The branch controls the Day Master with opposite polarity: structure, duty, regulation |
| Seven Killings (Qi Sha) | The branch controls the Day Master with the same polarity: pressure, intensity, command |
| Direct Wealth (Zheng Cai) | The Day Master controls the branch with opposite polarity: earned, steady resources |
| Indirect Wealth (Pian Cai) | The Day Master controls the branch with the same polarity: deals, risk, volume |
| Eating God (Shi Shen) | The Day Master feeds the branch with the same polarity: unhurried output, craft |
| Hurting Officer (Shang Guan) | The Day Master feeds the branch with opposite polarity: brilliant, provocative output |
| Friend (Bi Jian) | Same element, same polarity: peer equality, independence |
| Rob Wealth (Jie Cai) | Same element, opposite polarity: rivalry, magnetism, shared stakes |

This matrix is not nayin
Many lists of the 60 pillars attach a nayin (納音) pair such as Sea Metal or Fire in the Furnace to each row. Nayin is a separate folk layer mainly applied to year pillars. This matrix instead uses the hidden-stem method — the ten-god relation between your day stem and the branch's main hidden stem — because that is the convention mainstream BaZi practice uses when reading the day pillar, and it stays consistent with the rest of the chart.
What the day pillar cannot tell you
The day pillar is one pillar of four. The month pillar carries the career palace, the hour pillar carries late-life and team dynamics, and the ten-year luck pillars decide which phase is active now. The Four Pillars explained page covers the structure, and the five elements guide covers the balance that modifies every row above. Two people with the same row can differ sharply once those layers are added.
To see your own row in context, run the free BaZi calculator; it returns your day pillar, sitting context and element balance, and a full written reading expands the matrix into your specific chart.
For entertainment and self-reflection only. BaZi is not medical, legal or financial advice, and career decisions should not rest on a single pillar.
