Ten Gods as Work Psychology: Strengths, Blind Spots and Growth Moves
In BaZi (八字, Four Pillars of Destiny), the ten gods (十神, shi shen) are the ten relational patterns every other character forms with your Day Master — the stem of your day pillar. BaZi Oracle marks them automatically in every chart it computes. Read as work psychology, each god describes a recognizable workplace behavior pattern with its own strengths, blind spots and a realistic growth move. This page is the practical companion to the technical ten gods guide.
The relational logic behind the names
Each ten god is defined by what the other character does to the Day Master, combined with whether the polarities (yang versus yin) match. Five relations, each split by polarity, give exactly ten patterns:
| Relation to Day Master | Same polarity | Opposite polarity |
|---|---|---|
| Same element | Friend (比肩, Bi Jian) | Rob Wealth (劫財, Jie Cai) |
| I produce it | Eating God (食神, Shi Shen) | Hurting Officer (傷官, Shang Guan) |
| It controls me | Seven Killings (七殺, Qi Sha) | Direct Officer (正官, Zheng Guan) |
| I control it | Indirect Wealth (偏財, Pian Cai) | Direct Wealth (正財, Zheng Cai) |
| It feeds me | Indirect Resource (偏印, Pian Yin) | Direct Resource (正印, Zheng Yin) |
The polarity split explains why each pair shares a direction but differs in dosage. The same-polarity twin is the rawer, more self-referential version; the opposite-polarity twin is the socialized, structured version of the same relation.
The ten patterns at work
| Ten god | Psychological signature | Workplace strength | Blind spot | Growth move |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Friend 比肩 | Peer equality; loyal to own standards | Steady self-drive, fair dealing, real teamwork | Competes with peers for the same prizes; stubborn self-image | Let others lead one initiative per quarter |
| Rob Wealth 劫財 | Mirror-rival; claims space fast | Bold networking, resource mobilization under pressure | Impulsive spending; partnership money disputes | Write the equity split before starting |
| Eating God 食神 | Unhurried generator; enjoys the craft itself | Creative depth, taste, mentoring juniors | Perfectionism stalls shipping; comfort drift | Ship at 80 percent on a public deadline |
| Hurting Officer 傷官 | Brilliant critic; pushes past convention | Innovation, sharp communication, disruption | Friction with authority; overpromising | Argue the constraint, not the person |
| Indirect Wealth 偏財 | Deal-spotter; comfortable with risk and volume | Negotiation, market instinct, multiple income streams | Scattered bets; weak follow-through | One bet must reach maturity before the next |
| Direct Wealth 正財 | Builder of steady value; careful with money | Budgeting, reliability, long customer trust | Risk aversion; undervalues own work | Price by value, not by hours |
| Seven Killings 七殺 | Pressure specialist; command presence | Crisis leadership, decisiveness, high standards | Burnout cycles; harsh on self and team | Install recovery rituals; delegate the second-tier fights |
| Direct Officer 正官 | Institution-builder; plays long games by the rules | Governance, compliance, dependable delivery | Approval-seeking; slow to break bad rules | Renegotiate one rule per year |
| Indirect Resource 偏印 | Lateral thinker; quiet observer, esoteric depth | Research, systems thinking, unusual syntheses | Isolation; suspicion of the mainstream | Publish one public artifact monthly |
| Direct Resource 正印 | Scholar-mentor; credibility-seeking care | Teaching, documentation, trusted advice | Over-preparation; defers to credentials | Act before feeling fully ready |
Where your ten gods sit
The same god behaves differently depending on where it sits. The month stem and the main qi of the month branch describe the career pattern most visible to employers; the day branch describes your private working style and how you operate from inside; the year and hour pillars describe early environment and later output. Luck pillars then layer a temporary god on top for ten years at a time, which is why a Friend-dominant chart can feel like Seven Killings during a pressure decade. The Four Pillars page maps the palaces, and the Day Master guide covers the stem everything else relates to.
Classical pairings, modern translation
Classical texts read the ten gods in pairs. Four pairings translate directly into modern work advice:
| Classical pairing | Literal logic | Modern translation |
|---|---|---|
| Eating God controls Seven Killings (食神制殺) | Output disciplines pressure | Channel deadline stress into craft; the work absorbs the threat |
| Direct Officer feeds Direct Resource (官印相生) | Structure converts into growth | Turn institutional roles into learning and credentials |
| Wealth and Resource support each other (財印相輔) | Money and learning balance | Negotiate salary and tuition in the same conversation |
| Hurting Officer meets Direct Officer (傷官見官) | Critic meets regulator | Give the critic an outlet, or it sabotages the structure |
How to use this page
First compute the chart with the free calculator, which marks the ten god on every character. Then read your strongest two or three gods above, not just one: most people carry a lead pattern and a pressure pattern. For the element balance behind the pattern, see the five elements guide, and for the relational layer between two charts, the compatibility guide applies the same ten-god logic to pairs. A full written reading sequences all of it against your current luck pillar.
For entertainment and self-reflection only. The ten gods are not validated psychology, and nothing here is medical, legal or financial advice.
